I’m really excited about January!!!!!!! Can you tell?!

The other day I talked about how I’m doing Whole30 in January. I’m so pumped about it that I started a Facebook group – which is *totally* free and *totally* for whatever you want it to be. No commitment. No upsells (or whatever those are). No gimmics. I just really love that diet and I do better when I do it with other people.

But that’s not enough for me.

I’m also doing the Beachbody PiYo program.OH YES, friends, I’m going BIG into my health and fitness journey in January. I LOVE what my body has done for me – after all, it gave me an awesome little dude that I love SO MUCH. But I’m over the mama belly.

It’s time to get back into shape. For reals. Like, best shape ever.

Backstory

In all honesty, I’ve been planning this for weeks. As soon as I met my coach (I have a coach, friends!), I immediately ordered the kit, and waited, patiently to announce it here until I was sure this was something I actually wanted to do.

Well, this morning I had my first opportunity to dig into the kit, check out the program, and get started with the first video.

It’s all AWESOME. Amazing.

And I’m seriously SO excited!!

Seriously.

The first video is called “Align: The Fundamentals” and it’s all about form, alignment, and finding the right alignment for your body. It’s the same level of instruction you would get in a personal training session with me, or in one of your first Yoga Basics classes with me. Except in this video, you’re watching some professional fitness models do the movements and get the adjustments.

It’s a great place to start.

Honestly, that video alone is enough of a sell to make it worth buying the kit. If you EVER do yoga at home, and if you’ve ever taken a yoga class – but especially a class online or videos at home – you know that there is only so much a person can teach while they’re teaching the class. Some people will give you a bit of instruction on alignment while you’re in position, but rarely do you get a 45-minute demonstration of a range of modifications, with a range of abilities, in a high quality video.

It’s just really good.

And, as a yoga teacher, it’s a great resource to point people to.

Heresy! How can you say that as a Yoga Teacher?!

First off, I love yoga. Truly, I do. And I believe that Power Yoga (which is what I teach) is a complete fitness program that can get you into great shape, with great results.

But as a fellow yoga teacher (and studio owner) said to me recently, “it’s nice to change it up every once in a while.”

And that’s just what PiYo is for me.

It’s a change up. A little addition to my routine. And it’s something I’ve been wanting to learn and do for a while now.

But isn’t this against the rules or something?

Nope. Not at all.

When I explain that I’m a Power Yoga teacher, people have two immediate reactions: (1) that sounds hard and (2) that’s not going to give me what I need to meet my health and fitness goals.

The answer, friend, to both those assumptions is – would you say that to Charlene Johnson?

I don’t think so.

Because it’s false.

Yoga can give you everything you need. PiYo can give you everything you need. Pilates can give you everything you need.

It’s just a matter of finding a program that works for you and actually doing the program.

You Have to Do the Work

It’s funny – as an entrepreneur and a small business owner, I’m in a lot of lady boss circles. Ladies that are kick-ass, take-no-names, full-on-badass entrepreneurs that make life happen for themselves. And you know how that happens? How do they get to where they are?

By doing the work.

Health and fitness is no different. You have to do the work. You have to invest your time and your energy in something. And working with a program (and working with a coach) is an excellent way to get there. To meet your goals. To make things happen for yourself.

So what is PiYo?

It’s a program developed by celebrity trainer Charlene Johnson that fuses Pilates and Yoga to create a series workout that strengthens and tones your body without using weights. All you need is a yoga mat, some time, and the commitment it takes to see a program through (that’s where I come in).

The style of yoga that I teach is more similar to PiYo, in some ways, than other styles of yoga. Truly, they’re VERY similar. Some of my alignments are a little different (read: I think mine are better, but I’m biased!) and the goals are a little different (in my class we’re going for a mind-body experience, not just fitness). But ultimately, if you want to get in shape in a whole-body, truly healthy, and low-investment way (no extra equipment required), yoga, pilates, and PiYo are a great way to get there.

The point is, they all inform each other, they all strengthen and tone your body in similar ways, and the combination of all three gets you a rockin’ bod, ladies!
