On Finding Yoga Again

On Finding Yoga Again

Do you have an activity – a favorite thing – that you love to do, but never seem to make the time for? I do. And every time I start taking weekly classes again I think – “why don’t I do this more?” Yoga: the favorite pastime that I never make time for. Back in January I decided to try out some local yoga studios as part of my #GetFit2015 challenge. One of the studios offered an open house in the first week of January – free 30 minute sessions of their most popular classes. It was progressive – so the first class was gentle yoga, then all levels, then intermediate, then power yoga. I missed the first two classes because they filled quickly. And I couldn’t be happier about it. Because missing those classes gave me the chance to try the classes I really wanted: the hot power yoga and intermediate classes. Friends, I can’t fully explain the experience that I had in the studio that day. It was as if I rediscovered a …

15 Things About Me | Julie Love Gagen

Yesterday I was tagged in this Instagram post by Jen Lake of Sunlight and Air. I immediately had two conflicting reactions: 1. I LOVED reading her post and wanted to respond that very second. 2. I needed to write today’s blog post. I have to say, that one of the things I pride myself on is finding connections between seemingly unconnected things. In this case, a need versus a want. What will I do?! Both. I know, it’s the answer you might expect from me. Still, let’s play along this Monday morning with a “15 things about me”. If you’re in, and if you play along on Instagram, and don’t forget to tag me!! This is an open “challenge” to play along. Please, take the invitation. 🙂 Here are my 15 things. (1) My middle name is “Love”. It’s my mother’s last name and I *love* it. 😉 (2) I’m currently obsessed with brush script. Obsessed. (3) I’m a recovering engineer. In some ways, I miss it. In other ways, I’m happy to be on …

You can find all of my posts here. — This week’s prompt by Kellie Winnell of Kellie Stamps and Give a Girl Blog is all about #FromWhereIStand: capturing photos of your feet in all of the places that you wonder. Well, maybe not all of the places you wonder, but you get the idea. 😉 As you’ll see in my layouts, I took a break from the grid to play with extending pictures beyond their pages. That is, after all, the advantage of doing digital: you have a lot of …

Cold Weather Winter Capsule Wardobe

My Winter Capsule Wardrobe

This post miniseries on Cleaning out your Closet is part of my project #minimize: the the project where I get rid of all the things. It’s an awesome project. And it comes from a deep-rooted place in my soul – which is why you should check back on Thursdays to see all of the small yet awesome ways you can downsize clutter and live like a minimalist. If you want to know more about why I’m doing this project, read the first post. — In my last #minimize post I rounded out my Closet Clean Out miniseries with some discussion on my approach to managing my seasonal capsule wardrobes. This week I wanted to share my full round-up on the winter capsule wardrobe. First, let me share two points that will help to clarify this project and why this post is coming out in mid-April. One. I didn’t set out to develop a “capsule” wardrobe this winter. Changing my wardrobe over with the seasons is something I do quarterly, as the weather dictates. Now that …

30 Days of Thankful 2012 | Julie Love Gagen

An Update to an Unfinished Memory Keeping Project: 30 Days of Thankful 2012

I originally started this 30 Days of Thankful album in 2012, when Max was just two months old. I was SO excited to start it. And I had high hopes for how it would turn out. The thing is, I hated the final result. It felt messy and the picture quality was terrible and I was so disappointed / frustrated with it that I gave up. I put it at the bottom of a box in hopes that I would never see it again. And, of course, over the course of moving, unpacking, and working through my minimize project, I uncovered this grumbly mess of photos. And because I was in the mindset of only keeping the things that I love, and getting rid of all the rest, I felt compelled to address it. So I put in in my office and stared at it for a while. I considered lots of scenarios that involved “just finishing” it, but I knew in my heart of hearts that I would still have the same feeling about …

True Story Update: When a Fitness Challenge becomes a Self-Care Challenge

Hi Friends! Remember that post True Story: I just joined a Weight Loss Challenge? Well, the challenge is now complete and I’m happy to share the results and all that I learned along the way. Stay tuned: it’s not what you would expect. Well, actually, if you read the title, that’s exactly what it’s about – but read on anyway. It’s funny how challenges and personal goals have this way of turning out different than we expect. I began this challenge with two things in mind: I wanted to lose some extra winter weight I wanted a reason to prioritize my health Based on those goals, my plan worked. I not only lost weight, I trimmed several inches, toned up my mid-section for the first time since Max was born, and I am definitely far more focused on my health than I have been in a long time. I’m eating vegetables. I’m ready to try on stuff from my “skinny” wardrobe. I’m eating leaner foods. And, overall, I’m happier. But, as I mentioned, personal goals …

A little unexpected down time

Hi Friends! So, full confession: when I started writing my Fit-Tuesday post this morning I had a bit of a meltdown. You see, I’m transferring this lovely little site from wordpress.com to a self-hosted site so that I can expand my suite of offerings to include products and all sorts of fun, interesting, and inspiring stuff, just like what you see here every day. And I’m REALLY excited for that change! But change is hard, and learning new things in order to make that change can be really hard. So this morning when I got an email that said “your domain has been successfully transferred!” I thought “yay! that’s wonderful” and continued on my morning routine, having no idea that the translation of that email was “IT’S TIME TO FREAK OUT, JULIE, YOUR SITE IS DOWN!!!” And when I got another email a couple hours later from someone saying, “hey, I noticed you just started your site and I would love to help with web development” I thought “well, fine, it’s not perfect, but that’s …

Cultivate: One Little Word in March

For several years Ali Edwards has started her year with a word. No resolutions or promises to break, just one little word® to check back on for guidance or reflection. As she describes it, “You live with it. You invite it into your life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.” This year is all about cultivating the best parts of me. So join me on this journey and let’s see where it takes us. For more of my one little word, follow my tag one little word. — In March I started to hit my stride with my word cultivate. Things just started to come together, as they tend to do when you spend a lot of time planning and developing and listing. And then – just like that – everything gets easier. Things fall into place. And suddenly you find yourself with extra moments, spare time, to go further. To explore. To create. In March, Ali tasked the One Little Word® class …

That means ONE final week of the wardrobe challenge before we move on. I’ve been wanting an excuse to spruce up my closet a bit, so when the …
