a focus on health and fitness is good for the soul

This Blog is Officially Retired + Where to Find Me

Hi Everyone! This is my last blog post here at How I Sustain. I’m not gone, by any means. In fact, I have SO MUCH to share, that it started feeling too disjointed to continue. So I’m shifting the location of my person blog + the topics I discuss to two different places so that I can truly focus my content and the discussions we’re having into the places that serve your interests. How I Sustain Blog, as of today, will be retired. The archives will continue to be held here, so you can always come back + I will continue to reference this content in future posts. My new personal blog, with everything paper crafting + memory keeping + self-loving will be at JulieLoveGagen.com. My yoga blog, with everything living well + sustainable living + yoga will be at RenegadePowerYoga.com. Both sites are beautiful. Both sites are unique. Both sites truly capture everything that I love about the community that we have cultivated, together, online. And, of course, you can always check out all …

Happy Healthy Hammies is a yoga challenge and YouTube series designed to help you open up your hamstrings and work towards some advanced poses | Renegade Power Yoga

New Yoga VIDEO Series Now on YouTube!

Hi Friends! So this is SUPER exciting! And you can thank everyone in my Yoga for YOUR Life Course for what I’m sharing today, because they totally inspired me to reframe how I approached teaching this course and, last minute (literally at 2am the night/day of course launch), I decided to completely change the way we started the course and add in some really fun things. You can learn all about that – the how and why – in this video on my NEW Renegade Power Yoga YouTube Channel!   (By the way, I am in love with the phrase “my YouTube Channel” .. it’s been SO so long in the making, friends!). Also, I apologize for the massive belly that is only in Week 25. Seriously. I have 15 more weeks to go. And my belly is SO BIG.   So the series is inspired by an Instagram challenge being run through a variety of hosts (@RobinMartinYoga @PocketDwarf @Seonia) and sponsored by Dharma Bums Active. And while I’m not going to write everything that …

My Yoga YouTube Channel Launched Today!

Well, friends, it happened. FINALLY. After two days of unfortunate computer issues, and A LOT of time on the phone with Apple Support plus a trip to the Apple Genius Bar, I was able to get back to work today. So I finished editing my first YouTube video, created graphics, and officially launched my yoga YouTube channel! Phew! It’s no small feat, friends. But I feel SO so good about how it’s coming together. And I can’t wait for my upcoming yoga course Yoga for YOUR Life to launch (just ONE week!). If you’ve been wanting to get into yoga, wanting to start a practice, or you’re just curious about my video editing skills, you can check it out at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHOgE8pGKnEfaX5Jm0r7WfA In Other News… Because there’s always more news. 😉 I expanded my online presence and launched www.JulieLoveGagen.com. Right now, it’s a place where you can go to learn link and learn about all of my current projects (of which there seem to be MANY), from Yoga to Little Paper Projects to this Blog space. …

Baked oatmeal is absolutely delicious and a fastastic brunch recipe. Make it for your friends and they will love you forever | How I Sustain Blog

Baked Oatmeal (is delicious)!!

On a recent weekday at home, Max and I decided to get creative. It was warm and sunny outside, a beautiful spring day, but neither of us felt particularly compelled to leave the house. We were both a little tired, a little grumpy, a little sick, and a little in need of a quiet, easy day. We had plans, of course, because we always have plans. Always. But neither of us could get it together. We couldn’t get our breakfast made. We struggled to pick out clothes. We hemmed and hawed over mundane tasks like standing up and walking. Our scheduled plans felt overwhelming. And so, without meaning to, we collectively decided to stay home, play with toys, get some much needed cleaning done, and try a few recipes we’ve been wanting to make. In other words, we chose to stay in our pajamas until noon, wash a lot of dishes, and bake brunch food. You see, we have a thing for breakfast in this house. My husband grew up in a large family, made …

Yoga for YOUR Life | A course on developing a yoga practice that suits your life by Julie Love Gagen

Join Me and Develop YOUR Yoga Practice

Friends. Sigh. I can’t believe I’m FINALLY finally able to share this. I feel like I’ve been working so hard for so long for something.. and it’s weirdly relieving and wonderful and exhausting to get to this moment. I just launched my first online YOGA course!!   Learn more about Yoga for YOUR Life I’ve been teaching yoga for almost a year now. In fact, it was about this time last year that I announced I was pursuing yoga teacher training. And, because it’s me, and because I’m a routine over-planner, I quickly made a teacher training plan. And I worked really hard. And even though I had no idea what I was doing, and I had a feeling it was a little unnecessary – it is yoga teacher training after all – I wanted to feel prepared. Mentally and physically. So that I could invest my full, authentic, true self into the entire experience. The first few days in class were strange. I felt strangely disconnected, but yearned for connection. I felt tired, and …

Smoothies and Squats Spring Challenge with Julie

Let’s Do a 5-Day Smoothie and Squat Challenge!

Hi Friends! Just a short post on this gorgeous Saturday morning. I don’t know about you, but in my little corner of the world spring is finally FINALLY happening, and I’m inspired to move more, to get healthier, and to eat ALL the fruits and veggies. Or, at least, I aspire to do that. And, at the halfway mark in my pregnancy, I know that this is the time – and possibly the only time – when I’ll have the energy, interest, and motivation to strengthen my body in preparation for the BIG day in September (you know the one, it’s the day I give birth, and MAN is it a big one!). So I’m starting a Facebook group which will kick off in ONE WEEK, on April 30th. Every day there will be a smoothie recipe and a squat challenge. I found some amazing video examples from experts and smoothie recipes you’re sure to love. And the best part? The smoothies are all gluten-free, vegan, and paleo-friendly. Say whaatt?! I know. I’m really, really …

What I'm reading | Demystifying the Female Hormone System - Woman Code by Alisa Vitti

What I’m Reading: Woman Code by Alisa Vitti

Last spring my period disappeared. It completely freaked me out. And it propelled me to embark on a path to better understand my body, and what I can do to best serve it. At the time, I was on a low-hormone dose form of birth control. Cumulatively, in my life, I had been on birth control for 13 years, with several breaks in between (basically any time I could get away with not taking it). And every month, without fail, my period came. When I stopped taking birth control shortly after my husband and I were married, I immediately became pregnant (much to my surprise). And as soon as I had Max, my period almost immediately returned (note that for some women, it can take months to come back, especially if you’re breastfeeding full time, as I was). So two years later, a missed period was concerning to say the least. But that wasn’t the only symptom I had. I felt tired, hormonal, and really just not myself. I took pharmacy pregnancy tests, assuming I …
